New Leadership School Open in Preševo
“We have to understand that Serbia needs help, that it is necessary for each one of us to use our strength and knowledge in order to prevent this country from taking the wrong way. Without a society in which a system of respect for human rights exists there will be no political or financial progress, no matter how naive one may think this sounds. A leader needs to have a clear vision, sincerity, and ability to support with arguments the stances he/she is advocating for. Unfortunately, those who are following their selfish interests advance much easier in Serbia”, said a human rights expert, Marko Karadžić, at the opening ceremony of the “New Leadership School” in Preševo, November 8th, 2011.

Youth opts for cooperation between Kosovo and Serbia
“Communication between Kosovo and Serbia is necessary; continuous cooperation between students, media, civil society and political youth should be initiated to dissolve the stereotypes and prejudices, and to create a more realistic image of the ‘other’ in both groups. We demand from state institutions to create youth exchange programs, which would allow the young people to visit Serbia/Kosovo and learn more about how their peers and future friends from ‘the other side’ live.” These were the core conclusions made at the “LinKS: Conference of Youth from Kosovo and Serbia, held in Becici, Montenegro, March 4-6.

Second Day of LinKS conference
“Most mechanisms responsibility designed to impose greater responsibility on the politicians are not fully employed, which leaves much more space for the politicians to do whatever suits their interests. Civil society has had bitter experience with trying to change this; the journalists, on the other hand, are limited by their editorial policies, which are in turn limited by local politics in general. One of the rare functioning mechanisms for controlling the politicians is the European Union,” said Dusan Spasojevic, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences, while elaborating on the institutions for peace and cooperation at the conference of youth from Kosovo and Serbia “LinKS,” in Becici, Montenegro.

A Three-Day Conference of Youth from Kosovo and Serbia Begins
“We wish to create the space for the youth of Kosovo and Serbia to discuss the topics relevant for their generations. We don’t think the conference should offer ready-made solutions, nor do we all have to agree here. We wish, first and foremost, to get to know each other, and to talk about possible ways of overcoming the existing problems. I hope will come up with some recommendations that we can then forward to Belgrade and Prishtina officials. I also hope we will come up with possible activities and ways of cooperation,“ said Maja Micic, Director of Youth Initiative for Human Rights – Serbia (YIHR-Serbia) at the opening of the three-day conference of youth from Kosovo and Serbia “LinKS,” on March 4th 2011 in Becici, Montenegro.

Neither fear nor doubt
“It is important for young people from Kosovo and Serbia to meet and visit each other. The media are creating a perception as if we live in two different worlds, but when young people from Kosovo and Serbia meet like now, they see that they have so much in common, similar problems and interests. Young people need to form their own views, rather than letting the media do it for them. To people in Kosovo Belgrade seems far away, maybe because they are unable to travel to Belgrade with Kosovan or UNMIK documents, but it is actually quite close”, said Besart Lumi, Visiting Programme Coordinator at the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Kosovo (YIHR Kosovo) during the public dialogue between youth from Prishtina and Belgrade, held at the Belgrade Cultural Centre “Grad” on October 27, 2010.

Youth for Policy Change in the Region
On September 28, 2010, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) presented the publication “Young Politicians’ Regional Cooperation – Recommendations: Implementation of mechanisms of transitional justice and wider respect for human rights”, held at Belgrade “Media Centre”. The publication contains the recommendations young political party activists developed at the Conference on Young Politicians’ Regional Cooperation, held in Zagreb in November 2009. Young people from five Western Balkan countries (B&H, Montenegro, Croatia, Kosovo and Serbia) drafted recommendations to their governments and the international community, in response to the problems related to human rights violations in the region.

Diplomas and Matriculation Books for New Policy School Students
“When Vukovar was being ravaged, my generation was showering tanks with flowers. When Srebrenica was wiped out, my generation was silent. When refugees were arriving from Croatia, no one took notice of them. For all that, when the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) was being founded, I did not believe that the idea for some new young people to be addressing the grave legacy of the past would take hold. Today I am glad I was wrong. The onus to address these issues being on young people is the task of the New Policy School (NPS) and YIHR. You are invested with great responsibility to affect the attitude of your society and state towards the recent past”, said Marijana Toma, YIHR Steering Committee Chair at the opening of the New Policy School (NPS) annual ceremony, held at the Belgrade Cultural Centre “Grad” on September 7, 2010.
